Retired Members

Congratulations on your retirement!

Your benefit is deposited on the first business day of each month.  If you change bank accounts, please notify MERS immediately so that deposit of your benefit is not delayed.

You must also notify MERS if you change your address, phone number, or email address. You may make these changes on the Self Service Portal described below.

If your beneficiary dies you must send MERS a copy of their death certificate. Depending on the option you chose, your benefit may be increased upon notice to MERS of their death.

MERS mails annual tax forms (1099R) by January 31 to your address on file.

Benefits received from MERS are exempt from Louisiana Income Tax.  The exemption must be claimed on Schedule E of the Louisiana Resident Income Tax Return (IT-540). Be sure your tax preparer is aware of this law.

Please ask a family member, friend, or attorney to notify MERS of your death. MERS is obligated to collect benefit payments made after your death which could create a hardship for your family or estate if timely notice is not provided.

If you return to work with your former employer, or another MERS participating employer, on a part-time basis, request the gross monthly amount you may earn without offsetting your retirement benefit.

Helpful forms are provided under the “Forms” tab on the right of this page.

If you have any questions concerning after retirement responsibilities, call MERS at 225-925-4810 or 800-820-1137 to speak to a Retirement Analyst.
